Soup Kitchens Fighting Hunger in South Africa | IRFF UK

November 6, 2025

We wanted to share a powerful and urgent update from our work on the ground. Our latest blog post tells the story of the crisis in Walmer Township, Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa — where children are quietly starving while local heroes fight every day to stop that from happening.

“Children are dying – quietly, in hospitals, in townships, in homes…”

In the past year, more than 25 children under five have died from severe acute malnutrition — and the number continues to rise.

In the midst of this crisis, IRFF UK is supporting a lifeline: a soup kitchen run by the Walmer Angel Project, serving around 500 meals 5 times a week to those who would otherwise go without.
