In Walmer Township, hunger is a daily emergency. Join us to keep the soup kitchens open and feed 500+ children and elderly people this month.
The Urgency
A 10-Year-Old’s Fear
Hunger in the Walmer township
She had not eaten in two days. When she finally collapsed in the soup line, her worry wasn't for her health - it was that the pots would be empty before she got her share.
This is the reality in the Eastern Cape. In just 18 months, 973 children in this region have died from severe acute malnutrition. For the families we serve in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), a simple hot meal isn't just charity; it is the difference between surviving and starving.
33.2% Unemployment
Parents are going without food so their children can eat.
1 in 3 Children Stunted
Malnutrition is damaging brain development and locking the next generation into poverty.
Systemic Hunger
The Human Rights Commission confirms that government support is failing. We have to step in.
THE SOLUTION
A Food Lifeline: The Walmer Angel Project
IRFF UK has partnered with the Walmer Angel Project, a community-led initiative founded by Glenda Brunette.
Glenda began this work after seeing children sleeping on bare floors, surviving on nothing but rice and chicken necks.
Together, we are pushing back against hunger. We are currently supporting two kitchens run by local heroes like Julia and the Walmer Angels volunteers: The Established Kitchen: Feeds 330-350 people, five days a week.
The New Kitchen (Walmer G West): Opened in November 2025 to serve an additional 280 people three times a week.
"If we can save just a few children, we will have made a difference." — Edward Hartley, IRFF UK Manager
How you can help
Together We Can Make a Difference
The Cost of Compassion
We have crunched the numbers, and the cost to keep this lifeline alive is surprisingly low—but we cannot do it without you.
To sustain the new kitchen in Walmer G West for the 280 people relying on it, we need £300 per month.
To expand our reach and ensure no one is turned away at the back of the line, we need to raise £500 per month.
We have reallocated funds to keep the fires burning through January. Now, we need your help to secure the future for 2026.
You don't need to fund the whole kitchen to make a difference. Every donation fills a bowl. We are aiming to raise £1000 by the end of the year.
Hitting this target will allow the Walmer Angel Project to secure the months ahead—keeping the new kitchen running reliably while giving us the capacity to reach more people who need a meal and a place at the table.
£10
£10 Provides ingredients for approximately 120 meals. “For the price of a lunch, you can feed a crowd.
£20
£20 Covers the cost of Cooking Fuel & Stock. “Ensures the pots stay hot and the cupboards aren't bare.
£50
£50 Covers roughly 15% of the monthly running costs. “A powerful contribution toward keeping the kitchen open.
